Tanglin halt original peanut pancake
I finally got a chance to try the famous Tanglin Halt Mee Jiang Kueh! On one occasion a few months back, I joined the queue at around 10.45am, and by the time I reached the front of the queue, they were sold out 🙁 But the aunty had a leftover piece, so she gave it to me for free! Even though it wasn’t hot, I could tell the the batter was very fragrant, and that the peanuts were of good quality. The couple is pretty friendly, and I think it was really sweet of the aunty to give me a free piece after I queued for so long. Heehee, her good customer service left me wanting to try her mee jiang kueh even more!
So.. here’s my verdict!
Peanut pancake
$0.60 each
The pancake was filled with freshly ground nuts (major plus points for me since I’m all about fresh and natural ingredients) which the Uncle handpicks daily! And the batter was very flavorful as well. The mee jiang kueh was chewy and was perfectly complemented by the crunchiness of the nuts and sugar. Not too sweet, this mee jiang kueh is definitely a winner! (It’s best eaten hot) This is clearly the best item on the menu. But since I was there, I decided to try a few of their other offerings.
Red bean pancake
So, I decided to try the round red bean pancake.. although the batter was the same, I felt it was a bit harder, and too thick in this pancake. The red bean filling was pretty good though.
Yam pancake
The yam pancake is basically “orh-nee” inside a round pancake. The gripe I had with the yam pancake was that the outer layer of the pancake was too hard, making it difficult to bite into. And the filling was a wee bit too sweet for my liking.
My recommendation?
Just come here for the peanut pancake, after all their stall name suggests its the star attraction. Also, don’t come on the weekends unless you’re willing to queue for at least 30 minutes, but if you don’t like waiting, weekday mornings are a good time to drop by for a delicious grab-and-go breakfast.

*************************UPDATE***************************
I just tried their peanut pancake again, and this time I got a freshly made piece. Let me tell you that eating it when its hot makes A LOT of difference. The mee chiang kueh was melt-in-the-mouth good, and the flavour was enhanced. Plus the sugar&peanut mixture was like melting/embedded into the batter. AHMAZING. This is the third day in a row I’m having their mee jiang kueh. I’m in loveeee. Hahaha. And I also love how friendly the couple is.
Rating: 9/10 (if eaten freshly made on the spot)
